The feared dental drill is a powerful instrument we dentist use on our daily practice. It allows us mainly to cut hard tissues like enamel and bone in several different procedures to treat patients. I know it's not a favorite, but this little instrument enable us to help and restore oral health for many.
Technically speaking, it is a turbine propelled by air that comes from the true heart of a dental chair, an oil-free air compressor. The air travels through a hoses system till it reaches this instrument and makes it go around 100 000 to 500 000 rpm. That speed produces a great amount of heat that is cooled down using water spray directly over the bur. A bur changer is used to replace each bur to be used during the treatment.
Maintenance for this instrument is vital. Even dough the compressor should be oil-free and possess a filter, particles can still reach the rotor and obstruct it. Moreover, bacteria and other microorganisms can allocate inside this device putting patients at risk of cross-contamination. This instrument should be sterilized, oiled and cleaned as I am about to show. The model in this post is a standard NSK handpiece.
El temido taladro dental es un poderoso instrumento que los dentistas usamos en nuestra práctica diaria. Nos permite principalmente cortar tejidos duros como el esmalte y el hueso en varios procedimientos diferentes para tratar a los pacientes. Sé que no es uno de los favoritos, pero este pequeño instrumento nos permite ayudar y restaurar la salud bucal de muchos.
Técnicamente hablando, se trata de una turbina propulsada por aire que proviene del verdadero corazón de un sillón dental, un compresor de aire exento de aceite. El aire viaja a través de un sistema de mangueras hasta llegar a este instrumento y lo hace girar entre 100 000 y 500 000 rpm. Esa velocidad produce una gran cantidad de calor que se enfría con agua pulverizada directamente sobre la fresa. Se utiliza un cambiador de fresas para reemplazar cada fresa que se utilizará durante el tratamiento.
El mantenimiento de este instrumento es vital. Incluso la masa, el compresor debe estar libre de aceite y tener un filtro, las partículas aún pueden llegar al rotor y obstruirlo. Además, las bacterias y otros microorganismos pueden ubicarse dentro de este dispositivo poniendo a los pacientes en riesgo de contaminación cruzada. First, we need to take the air rotor out from this instrument. It is usually held by a screw-on cap. Once removed we only need to press the bur in for the rotor to come out on the other side.
Primero, necesitamos sacar el rotor de aire de este instrumento. Por lo general, se sujeta con un tapón de rosca. Una vez retirado solo tenemos que presionar la fresa para que el rotor salga por el otro lado.

When we finally have this piece out, we can place it inside a small dappen glass with alcohol. It should be immersed completely.
Cuando finalmente saquemos esta pieza, podemos colocarla dentro de un pequeño vaso de agua con alcohol. Debe sumergirse por completo.
Now, we focus on the inside of the instrument. Depending on how frequent you perform this task (which it should be frequently) one might find more of less dirt particles to remove. A gauze will alcohol could be enough otherwise we need to use a very soft sandpaper.
Ahora, nos enfocamos en el interior del instrumento. Dependiendo de la frecuencia con la que realice esta tarea (que debería ser con frecuencia), es posible que encuentre más o menos partículas de suciedad para eliminar. Una gasa con alcohol podría ser suficiente, de lo contrario, debemos usar un papel de lija muy suave.
After at least 20min, we can take out the air rotor from the dappen glass with alcohol. It is important to make it rotate while still inside. This will help remove some of the particles that might have gotten there. The rotation, once out of the alcohol, should feel free without any bumps or hard stops.
Después de al menos 20min, podemos sacar el rotor de aire del vaso dappen con alcohol. Es importante hacerlo girar mientras aún está adentro. Esto ayudará a eliminar algunas de las partículas que podrían haber llegado allí. La rotación, una vez fuera del alcohol, debe sentirse libre sin golpes ni paradas bruscas.

To place the Air rotor back inside the hand piece, we need to guide this step using a single dot or any other type of guide our model has to introduce the piece back in. In this case, you can notice in the images a small dot and the corresponding guide on the inner part where it should be placed.
Para volver a colocar el rotor de aire dentro de la pieza de mano, debemos guiar este paso utilizando un solo punto o cualquier otro tipo de guía que tenga nuestro modelo para volver a introducir la pieza. En este caso, se puede notar en las imágenes un pequeño punto. y la guía correspondiente en la parte interior donde debe colocarse.

Now, we add oil for lubrication. It should go in the back of the cap where we insert the bur changer and on the bottom of the instrument inside the bigger tube. Two drops are more than enough on both places.
Ahora, agregamos aceite para lubricar. Debe ir en la parte posterior de la tapa donde insertamos el cambiador de hamburguesas y en la parte inferior del instrumento dentro del tubo más grande. Dos gotas son más que suficientes en ambos lugares.
Lastly, we only need to connect our handpiece back and make the air and water go through it for about a minute.
Por último, solo necesitamos volver a conectar nuestra pieza de mano y hacer que el aire y el agua la atraviesen durante aproximadamente un minuto.
That's it, our turbine is ready to be used again and help patients though they will probably will keep fearing it hehe.
