I've been trying to learn the notes of the fretboard for quite some time now and embarrassingly enough I'm still really struggling.
Guitarist and YouTuber Tom Quayle has developed an app called Solo that I downloaded which is designed to help you with improvising over chord changes. It gets you to work on what they call 'Intervallic Functions'. So you are given a note and you have to find the 3rd or the 5th or flat 13th... or whatever. The downside of this is that you need the starting point of knowing where the root note is.
After downloading quite a few dud apps for learning the fretboard I discovered GuitarKing (https://guitarking.com/). Available on ISO and Android. It's not free and requires a membership/subscription to use which I'm not super keen on. It's about $10 a month.
While it's not very musical it's exactly what I've been looking for. Check out the video to see how it works.
To set it up you can focus on a particular string or groupings of them. I struggle with the G and B strings (as you can see...) and in particular moving between them.
I've been using it every day and have seen some progress. Still not great but better than I was. If I get to know the notes I'll move onto the Solo app and post review on that. Don't hold your breath and hopefully the video won't be as painful.
