The tree man

Link

Night set in across the eastern mountain range. The bushes rustled in the silence. A man emerged from the trees, joining the small pathway that cut through the forest.

The moon was high in the sky, its light casting a dark glow over everything. His face was covered by a hood and his hands tucked inside his cloak. The man stop for a moment to adjust his belt, then a crackling was heard deep in the woods.

"I am not alone, am I?"

The man muttered, looking around, but saw nothing even slightly out of the ordinary.

"I hid my trail well." The man muttered, and continued on his path, looking back occasionally.

The man took a winding path out of the woods, keeping to the ridge of the mountain. He continued on down the mountain until he came to a house. He kept walking, towards the town down below. A man stepped out from behind the door, an old and withered man.

"Do you have news?" he whispered.

"I do sir, I have found him."

"Where?"

"Somewhere within the mountains, deep within the woods. I was in the forest when I heard him. He was carrying an important piece of information. I saw a light, and I saw him running with something under his cloak."

The old man nodded, though he did not show any reaction. The old man walked up the stairs to the house, but stopped at the top. He turned around, walking back to the man.

"You have done well, I will let you take the information back to your boss, then."

"But what of you sir?"

"I have done as promised. I have retrieved him for him."

The old man turned, and stepped into the house, the door going up slowly behind him.

The man removed his hood, and looked at the moon with a frown. The moon's light was no longer very bright, and he sighed. The moon of that night shone brightly, as the night drew to a close. It shone on the town below, with it's two towers and the rows of houses.

The town was asleep. A young man sat beside the fire in his room. A small book rested beside him. He flipped through the pages, glancing at the small words on each page, though most of the words were not in his language. He closed the book suddenly. He was tired, and set the book aside. He stood up and began walking out of the room. His feet stepped on the floor, his hands moved to adjust his cloak. His body was thin and of poor stature. He was not an imposing figure, but when he gained the position he did, everyone trembled and slunk into a corner. They knew the type of person he was. They knew his reputation, they had heard about him before. Regardless of them knowing all this, he was still an imposing presence.

The young man walked out of the room, down the small hallway. His feet trailed the cold ground, his shoulders slumped slightly as he walked. He descended the stairway, and continued to where the house stopped. Upon emerging from the house, he found himself in the plaza.

He stopped and looked around the area. The town was sound asleep, with the only living thing being the animals nearby.

The young man walked to the edge of the city, his feet planted on to the hard stone. He stared at the large group of devices lying around. The devices moved slightly, and stood several feet tall. They were very large, and bright. They were worriedly shining their lights on the city. At the center of the devices, a loud buzzing could be heard. The wall of the devices began to shift, opening into the gap between the devices.

An armored man stepped out from the gap. He looked around, spotting the figure near the edge of the plaza.
