Gardening Season 2021 - Heavy Rain and Floods (July 19)

After getting away with super heavy storms for a couple of days, yesterday the North part of Serbia was also hit by a really heavy rain fall, ice fall, thunderstorm and strong wind. We had a family celebration at a restaurant so we haven't been at home almost the entire day and this morning we had a very nice scenery to see... Rain kept falling all night so parts of our property got flooded same as our neighbors.

Our property is not that wide but it's very long so the area in front/back of our house and the garden area are a little bit higher than the middle part where all the water pilled up from the rain and it was impossible to get to the chickens and garden without rain boots. Water got into the shed as well so we had to empty the big wooden crate where we store away corn and we'll see if it will be usable once it gets fully dry.

Chicken area is quite spacious so that was a big relief, there's a flooded corner but they still have plenty of space, their food is safe and chicken coop is lifted from the ground which is great for situations like these. Cats are also managing to avoid the water and find a spot to chill/nap.

Here's an attempt of taking a cool reflection photo, sometimes it helps to find a distraction and something fun when things like this happen. I really had a feeling I was at the lake with all the water around me. :D

I was so worried that our garden wasn't going to make it through these weather conditions and I was so happy when I saw nothing serious happened. There's one bigger branch of raspberry bush that got knocked over which is not that big of a deal because we have a lot more and it was supported by the wood sticks, I guess that saved a lot of our fruits and veggies.

We are still enjoying fresh tomatoes and today I noticed a few cherry tomatoes as well but I haven't harvested them yet. Tying them to the wood sticks for support was once again crucial in keeping them safe.

Photo on the left is towards the front of the garden where we have a little bit of peppers planted and photo on the right is at the end of the garden where we have a few rows of peppers. They were perfectly lined up but a couple got messed up by the wind but I think they're gonna make it. I don't have a closer photo but there's a lot of peppers growing so next time I'll make sure to take a better photo of them.

Our neighbors planted corn before us so it grew much taller than me, our corn is a little bit behind but it wasn't damaged at all unlike the neighbors where a few of them are now leaning and one is completely flat. Cucumbers are looking good, a lot of support kept them untouched.

Small part of our greenhouse has a hole now, it wasn't in a good shape anyways and it was all patched so I'm surprised it survived all the weather changes this spring and now in the summer. I think we will probably get rid of this improvised greenhouse all together. On the other hand, grapes are looking really, really good so far and it looks like this could be a great grape season (fingers crossed).

Thank you for checking out our little (unwanted and unplanned) flood adventure and garden update, I hope you're all having a great day! :)
