So Mcvities have brought out some new flavoured Jaffa Cakes again. The first one I tried was the Passion Fruit flavoured ones. Let’s see how these compare with the original Jaffa Cake..

First things first. A Jaffa Cake is a cake not a biscuit! There was even a court battle between Mcvities and HM Custom’s and Excise where Mcvities baked a giant Jaffa Cake to prove that Jaffa Cakes are really cakes and not biscuits. Mcvities won their case and Jaffa Cakes were recognised as chocolate covered cakes. Now I’ve got that off my chest, let’s get down to the tasting. So the first thing I notice is that the pack is definitely smaller than Jaffa Cakes used to be. Yes it says 10 on the box, but I swear you used to get at least 12 cakes if not 14 in a pack! Even the cellophane wrapper looks far too long for 10 cakes. They definitely have shrunk the pack. The Passion Fruit Jaffa Cakes still have that same look with the sponge base, the jelly in the middle and the thin layer of chocolate on top. I bit into my first one. I could taste passion fruit. The jelly was a light clear yellowy / orangey colour but more on the yellow side. It didn’t look that appetising when I was pulling the jelly apart to see what it looked like. Not like the beautiful orange colour you get in the proper Jaffa Cakes. The taste seemed a bit too flowery and perfumery for me. I did have a few to see if my opinion of the cake changed, but it didn’t.

For me, I wouldn’t buy these again. I have about half a pack left over. Not even my husband wants them. I feel like I should put them in the bin rather than offer them to guests. They are an embarrassment. I don’t know why you would want to mess with something that it a seller. Everyone loves Orange Jaffa Cakes, but I doubt there will be many takers for these. Yuck!!
