Chapter 21: Case Closed

Vulay arrived at the Enforcer Headquarters. She noticed the media had formed at the front, so she entered through the back. Arville saw Vulay enter the building. He ran over to her.

‘I got him. A full confession,’ he said enthusiastically. ‘On tape and in writing.’

‘Great, just hand it over to me, and I’ll include it in the evidence,’ responded Vulay.

‘Oh no, I’m taking this directly to the Head Enforcer,’ said Arville as he grinned.

‘How about we have a quick chat in my office first?’ Vulay said to him in a calm tone.

They entered her office. Arville sat in her chair. ‘So, you decided to give me a guided tour of my future office,’ said Arville in a smarmy tone.

‘How did you get Morgan to confess?’ said Vulay forcefully.

‘Through great interrogation skill,’ responded Arville.

Vulay gave him a cold, hard stare.

‘I was joking about this office. I think I’m going to be the next Head Enforcer,’ said Arville with a grin on his face.

Vulay stormed out of her office. She entered Interrogation Room One to speak with Morgan. ‘Hey, I think there has been some confusion,’ Vulay said to him.

‘No, confusion at all,’ interrupted the Head Enforcer as he entered the room just after her. Arville and another enforcer followed him.

He turned to Arville and said, ‘Take her to the holding cell.’ Arville yanked Vulay by the arm and led her to the holding cell that Denise was in.

‘Why are you in here? Where’s my dad? Where’s Victor? What’s going on?’ blurted Denise to Vulay.

‘I’m going to do everything I can to put this right,’ replied Vulay.

‘There’s nothing you can do to put anything right,’ said Orcille as he peered through the bars from his mattress.

‘I’ll put it right for both of you. I’ll put it right for Victor,’ said Vulay with a look of pain on her face.

Orcille looked at her carefully. He came over to the partition. He reached through the bars and held Vulay’s hand. He offered his other hand to Denise. She backed away.

‘It’s okay,’ Vulay said to her. Denise came over and held both Vulay’s and Orcille’s hands. Denise had a confused look on her face.

Vulay turned to Denise. ‘We lost Victor. I’m so sorry,’ she said as she struggled to control her emotions. Denise burst into tears. Orcille pressed his head against the bars.

A few hours passed, and the three of them remained holding hands. Arville approached the cell. ‘Denise, we need to talk,’ said Arville with a smile on his face.

He opened the cell and escorted Denise to an interrogation room. He sat her down in a chair. ‘Just a few quick questions,’ he said to her in a firm voice. ‘Did your father abuse you as a child?’

‘No,’ responded Denise forcefully.

‘Did your father force you to kidnap those children,’ asked Arville.

‘No,’ she responded sharply. ‘We didn’t…’

‘That’ll do,’ interrupted Arville.

He turned his recording device off. He smiled at Denise. ‘Thank you so much,’ he said to her. ‘I’m having a good day, but not as good as yesterday.’

He reached into his pocket to pull out his phone. ‘Take a look at this beautiful photo,’ he said with a big grin on his face as he showed it to Denise. It was a photograph of Victor lying dead on the ground, with Arville posing next to him. ‘Best moment of my fucking life,’ he said softly to her.

Denise screamed. He slammed her face hard into the table. ‘I think Darius might be next,’ he whispered into her ear.

He let her go as she fell to the ground. ‘If you confess to taking those children to Victor. Nobody else has to suffer. It ends here,’ demanded Arville.

Denise climbed to her feet. She looked Arville in the eyes. ‘Fuck you, asshole,’ she said in a determined voice.

‘Darius was at the medical centre last night,’ said Arville in a more aggravated voice.

He turned his phone to Denise to show video footage of Darius being rolled into the medical centre on a stretcher.

‘Next time he might not be so lucky,’ he said to her in a firm voice. ‘Your father already confessed for the benefit of others. Are you going to be the bitch who let everyone down?’ said Arville in a slightly raised voice.

Denise remained standing while continuing to stare bravely into Arville’s eyes.

‘Here’s a nicely written statement. Care to make your mark,’ said Arville calmly as he pushed the statement and a pen in front of Denise.

Denise grabbed the pen and stabbed Arville in the arm. She pulled it out and tried to stab him a second time. Arville knocked Denise to the floor and handcuffed her. Arville pushed open the interrogation room door and called for help. Other enforcers came to his aid. The Head Enforcer approached the injured Arville.

‘The testimony of the two girls, the video recordings, and now this attack are more than enough evidence to prove her guilt,’ said the Head Enforcer to Arville. ‘You just nailed a third one. I think I’m looking at my successor.’

The Head Enforcer approached another enforcer. ‘Go outside and tell them I’m ready for a full press conference,’ he said in a confident tone.

Denise was carried back to the holding cell. Two enforcers threw her in harshly. They did not even bother to remove her handcuffs.

‘Hey, uncuff her now,’ called out Vulay. They ignored her and walked away.

Denise lied on the floor, struggling to breathe. Vulay pulled her to an upright position against the cell wall. ‘What happened to you?’ she asked.

‘He’s a monster. He’s a complete monster,’ gasped Denise. Orcille said nothing as he watched from the opposite side of the cell.
