Diversify ‘homogenous’ US cybersecurity workforce

A group of experts across multiple fields on Thursday recommended a sweeping set of actions to diversify the U.S. cybersecurity workforce, saying the field was “overwhelmingly” white and male.

The Aspen Institute’s Tech Policy Hub and Aspen Digital detailed the recommendations in a report following two meetings over the past year with dozens of individuals across cybersecurity, government, academia, nonprofits and other industries.

MyRepublic customer data compromised
Singapore internet services provider says it was informed by “an unknown external party” of the security breach, which had occurred on a third-party data storage platform and affected 79,388 local mobile subscribers.

MyRepublic says almost 80,000 of its mobile subscribers in Singapore have had their personal data compromised, following a security breach on a third-party data storage platform. The affected system had contained identity verification documents needed for mobile services registration, including scanned copies of national identity cards and residential addresses of foreign residents.

Cybersecurity Report Notes Overall Improvements to Industrial Security Posture but 48% Of Organizations Unsure if They’ve Been Breached
The 2021 edition of the SANS 2021 OT/ICS Cybersecurity Report from Nozomi Networks confirms that threats to industrial operations are rising both in number and severity, but also finds that organizational capability is also scaling up to match them.

However, this state of preparation is not an across-the-board increase, even as 91% of these companies now use some sort of cloud technology in the OT environment. 48% of responding organizations say that they cannot be sure that they have not been breached, and about 25% have not conducted a security audit in the past year. Additionally, about 23% say they have no operational technology security budget.

Justice department battles to contain ransomware attack
The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development says it is working with state agencies to investigate a ransomware attack on its IT systems.

According to the department, its IT systems were compromised following a security breach on Tuesday evening.

“This has led to all information systems being encrypted and unavailable to internal employees, as well as members of the public. As a result, all electronic services provided by the department are affected, including the issuing of letters of authority, bail services, e-mail and the departmental website.”

Large-scale IoT deployments are currently within our grasp technologically in the form of smart cities.

Smart cities have promised to make our lives more efficient. With connected devices and information controlled by an intelligent system, cities will never have traffic jams again. Connected technology can also make cities energy efficient with different sensors identifying waste. Despite the tech industry talking about it for a decade and a half, it has not come to fruition.
