The telematic platform, managed by the doctors of the "Virgen Macarena" university hospital in Seville, detected more than a thousand cases in the first six months of 2022, a number of cases that had instead been reached in 2021 in a double period, twelve months. Stroke, according to the data reported, is now a rapidly increasing disease and is already the leading cause of death in women and the second in men. It is also the leading cause of acquired disability in adults and the second leading cause of dementia, after Alzheimer's. The latest figures from the Andalusian center are shocking. Stroke no longer predominantly affects the elderly, but also occurs in children and has become the leading cause of brain damage in this segment of the population. Every year, more than 18,000 Andalusian citizens are affected by strokes, of which half are estimated to remain permanently damaged or die. This high figure could double in 2022 if the rate of strokes diagnosed so far this year at the Andalusian Center (CATI) is maintained, as confirmed by the neurologist at Virgen Macarena Hospital, Ana Barragán, one of the managers of this center, who managed to to reduce, thanks to the coordinated action of primary care centers and hospitals, mortality and disability due to this disease.
