Newly Diagnosed Immune Thrombocytopenia in a Pregnant Patient after COVID Vaccine

Thrombocytopenia is a bleeding disorder that has been reported as a possible side-effect to the COVID vaccines. The very rushed human clinical trials for these vaccines did not include any data on pregnant or lactating women. This is an enormous concern since this condition can lead to other possible fatal conditions in pregnancy like HELLP syndrome or pre-eclampsia.

A case report published this August documents a first-trimester patient presenting with a rare type of thrombocytopenia seen in the third trimester. She was diagnosed 13 days after receiving her injection.

"The expeditious development of vaccinations against SARS-CoV-2 infection represents one of the most remarkable scientific achievements of our time. Although large-scale randomized trials demonstrated the safety of the COVID-19 vaccination in the general population, pregnant and lactating women were noticeably excluded from these studies. In this report, we describe a case of ITP following COVID-19 vaccination".
