It’s that time of the year again folks! Free Comic Book Day is here! Today (Aug 14) is the day that participating comic book shops (nearly all) give away TONS of FREE comics! I believe this is around 20 years going strong on this one which is pretty cool.
The day was initially started to help bring awareness to the industry. Having people pick up some books they might have not otherwise tried is also a big plus that works for us in our shop Conquest Comics.
Usually the first Saturday in May each year, the day is a perfect example for shops to make a fun event out of it. In the past we have had artists sketching and signing, beautiful cosplayers mingling and taking photos with patrons, vendors set up in front of our shop, a tremendous sale, and oh yeah…FREE comics!
Sadly this year’s event was postponed until today, August 14th due to Covid restrictions earlier in the year. Our event today is going to be much more scaled back due to issues like that pesky Covid problem, blazing hot summer, changed date, and a few other points.
We don’t want a packed shop today…but are hoping more for a steady flow as folks pick up some freebies. The massive sale is running and we restocked ALOT of product these past few weeks as to have the best selection possible. Fingers crossed for a smooth day.

I would advise NOT being that guy or gal who pops into the shop…snags free books…then bails. While the comics are free to patrons, we are still purchasing them. Decent shops usually spend a hefty chunk of change for these specific books to pass out, so be sure to show your local shop some love and not only check out what they have to offer…but make a purchase ya cheep bastard! 😜
I’ll update tomorrow and let ya know how we fared. It’s by far our busiest day of the year, although I’m not expecting anywhere near the success of past days due to the date switcheroo. I’ll settle for a stress free and steady day. Fingers crossed. 🤞
