Introducción al volumen

cubo.jpg

The definition of volume is the space occupied by a body, however, in the drawing everything we do is 2D so we can not make something has volume, so you have to SIMULATE the volume, this we will do, with three points:

- Proportion of the bodies, if a body is deformed its volume will not be understood.

- The volume: It must be practiced and corrected, above all, to understand it (this is the point we are going to see today).
- Illumination: Although it is not obligatory, for a drawing to be a good drawing without shadows, it must be almost perfect in the other areas, like volume, perspective, etc.

Today we are going to see the volume and a tip that will help you to improve this section quickly:

image.png

Let's use as an example this sketch of Usopp, although it is not finished and does not even have shadows, we can already see a clear 3D dimension. This is due to the perspective and volume, in another moment I will explain the perspective, today we will focus on the volume.

How can I get a body with such a realistic volume?

The answer is as simple as practicing, but with the following exercise, you will learn a little faster, plus you will understand sooner how volume works.

image.png

The exercise is simple, first, take an old drawing and try to tattoo it, I explain, in the image above you see two cubes, the one on the left shows a cube, which is tattooed with red lines, which are on the face ordering it, on the right, the green lines represent the faces that we do not see, but they are there, and are important, because without them there would not be what we see in front of us.

image.png

If we go back to our sketch and apply the exercise, you can see how we should interpret the volumes. (the back is in dots instead of green, do it as you see more comfortable and better understand it) It is as if you tattooed a ring around the body, this represents the skin of the character, with this you can better understand the volume, now if you look at your old drawings and do this test, it may not match, this is because the volume of that drawing is wrong, so you know that for future drawings, you can check if the volume is correct.

You already have in what to practice, the next publication will deal with the illumination.

A more complicated subject and in which you will need to understand the volume, otherwise you will not understand the reason of the things.

Keep practicing and until the next post.

Best regards 😄.
