Art Talk: Artist Dale Chihuly

Today's Art Talk artist highlight is Dale Chihuly. This is appropriate as the tour for this month was of Chihuly at Cheekwood Estate and Garden in Nashville, Tennessee.

I have highlighted many artist through 2020- Raphael, Fredric Bazille, Albert Bierstadt, Rembrandt, Rembrandt Peale and Monet. I showed a very short video of Monet and for Chihuly I am linking two talks he gave at Google. It is so wonderful to be able to highlight a living artist and share a couple of videos of him and his work.

In this video Dale Chihuly shows, talks about and answers questions about four of the exhibitions he has done- Venice, Garden and Glass, Jerusalem, and Ice.

Speaking of The Light of Jerusalem in 2000, which was visited by more that a million visitors, Dale Chihuly said,

I think this exhibition probably proved to me how much art is needed in people's lives.

I agree, art is needed in my life and enriches it so much.

Chihuly and Leslie talk about Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle, Washington.Chihuly and Leslie talk about Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle, Washington.

There is something very magical about glass.

After watching this video I want to go to Seattle!

I have also mentioned before that I am a big fan of Chihuly's paintings too.

Some things we about Dale Chihuly from the videos

He is from Tacoma, Washington
He has a degree in interior design and architecture from University of Washington in Seattle
The first country he showed at was Finland, second- Ireland and third- Mexico. Now he shows all over the world
He was a commercial fisherman in Alaska to earn money for gradschool
He went to University of Wisconsin for graduate degree fine arts
He did a Fulbright in Venice, Italy
He went to Rhode Island School of Design and started a glass program there
He also started a glass blowing school (Pilchuck Glass School) outside of Seattle, Washington
He lost the sight of his eye in 1976, from a car crash, he has no peripheral vision or depth perception
He has about 15 teams in his studio for doing, glass blowing, mocking, registration, installation, publishing etc. There are 10-12 permanently employed glassblowers.
