1st Place
Carrie Ann Baade - “Anti-vanitas,” 2018; oil on canvas
@carrieannbaade

Anti-Vanitas, oil on canvas, 48 x 36 inches, 2018.
A vanitas is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of ephemerality and death. In my work Anti-Vanitas, I am suggesting an everlasting or renewal of life that goes beyond this mortal coil. The vulture is a sacred bird that kills nothing but cleans up after death.
