Rescue spotlight: Strawberry Fields Animal Rescue NV

For the most part I focus on the animal rescue centers that are located in developing or poorer countries where the need is more evident due to a near complete lack of any sort of animal control systems in place. In Thailand, stray dogs are just part of the landscape and have been for as long as I have lived here and I presume many many years prior to that. While the conditions that the strays in this, and other countries like it are no doubt significantly worse than most western countries, that doesn't mean that the work that is being done in other parts of the world is any less signficant.

Today I want to talk about a place in Nevada that does essentially the same work that we do and are also a small group the operates as far as I can tell on donations and probably by dipping into their own pockets for the rescue efforts the perform.

I will admit that I do not know the owners / operators of this place but was made aware of it by a Thailand resident from Nevada who came to volunteer with us for a few days (thanks Patrick!) The work that they do there is probably a bit different than our own because in America, unwanted dogs on the street are picked up and taken to government shelters where unfortunately, after a certain amount of time they are euthanized if they are not adopted or claimed by whoever the owner is.

according to their own FB page this is their mission

Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and re home unwanted animals in northern Nevada, in addition to providing sanctuary for animals who may be deemed unsuitable for adoption.

While this is very different than our own situation I really appreciate the last part of that statement because in western countries the "unsuitable for adoption" situation probably occurs quite frequently. There is no denying that some dogs and cats have behavioral issues that will make them less attractive to potential adopters and then these animals only have two possible outcomes: Euthanasia or some angelic group like Strawberry Fields coming along to look after them.

According to Patrick, our Nevada visitor volunteer, Strawberry Fields is a major part of the reason why these animals are able to find what they refer to as "furrever homes" and this is such an important part of the animal rescue operations that exist around the world. I am certain that this organization, much like our own, only has a certain capacity that they can maintain as far as occupants is concerned, then after that, they have to play triage the same way that we do and every time that this happens over here in Krabi, it breaks my heart a little bit.

I realize that not many people can donate their money or time to us here in Krabi because we are so far away from where it is that you happen to live but I once again want to encourage everyone out there to do as much as you can for your local animal rescue centers or animal sanctuaries including donating your time. I have never heard of any organization that would deny this sort of offer and it is a life changing experience, even if it means you are going to be scooping poop at one point. Also, as usual, I want to remind everyone that at any given time there are thousands upon thousands of dogs and cats awaiting adoption around the world and for you to seriously consider this option rather than buying "premium" animals.

To the staff at Strawberry Fields, we commend you and thank you for doing what you do.
