Pachamama

In practically all of Latin America the 1st. In August of each year the day of the Pachamama is celebrated, that is to say, the day of the Earth; In some native indigenous languages of the Andean area of this subcontinent such as Quechua and Aimará, the word Pacha means Earth, Universe, and World, according to the belief, the Pachamama takes its energy from the cosmos, time and space to provide fertility of soils although it is also responsible for earthquakes.

Here in Argentina, we have inherited that tradition, mainly in the northwestern provinces, within the celebrations there is a rather curious custom, it is normal that on the first day of August of each year three sips of a preparation composed of an alcoholic drink called cane to which a branch of male rue is introduced a month before, an aromatic plant very widespread in the region belonging to the family of Rutaceae but which singularly is not native to here but is from the Mediterranean and Southwest Asia, likewise "male" which means male or male is not a literal description, the plant is hermaphrodite.

According to a popular legend, every 1st. In August you have to take three sips of that infusion and you will live another year. For some reason that I don't fully understand, it is becoming more and more popular, so much so that a small 125-cubic-centimeter bottle of cane with rue is available here for $ 450, almost $ 3. Obviously, beliefs are one thing and the businesses related to them are quite another.

I think for the first time in my life I have been given a bottle of that drink and this morning I took the three recommended sips. It is not ugly or strange, the cane is a simple distillate of sugar cane so it is a sweet and somewhat harsh drink, I could not distinguish the aroma of the rue.

We will see if next year I am still in this astral plane, although it will not be possible to ensure that it has been found thanks to the special preparation.

In any case, today is Earth Day and that deserves a toast in gratitude for all that it gives us despite our strenuous efforts to destroy it.
